Random thoughts that kept me awake
I woke up at 6:00 this morning. Kevin usually wakes me up around 5:00 or 6:00, but today he did not wake up until 8:00. John’s alarm went off at 6:00 and he went back to sleep. He is a better sleeper than me. I could not go back to sleep. I was lying in bed thinking of things I wanted to write down. Silly things like the fact that I couldn’t sleep at 6:00 this morning. Yesterday we cut some insulating bubble wrap (silver on one side, white on the other) to fit in our windows to see if it would help Kevin sleep longer. It worked. Or maybe Kevin just slept longer today because he does that every once in a while. We do not really have a schedule, i.e., we don’t do things at the same time every day. But we do have a routine, i.e. he eats after he wakes up and he usually gets tired 2 hours after he woke up. Not having a schedule makes it hard at times because he doesn’t have an exact bedtime. So, if he falls asleep at 6:00 he will sleep until about 3:00 but if I keep him up until 8:00 or 9:00 he will sleep until 5:00 or 6:00. Last night he went to sleep at 8:00 and woke up at 8:00 today. It was nice. Anyway, I like the idea of covering the windows. It makes our apartment much darker, for sure.
We got new callings yesterday. We knew about them for 2 weeks so we’ve been able to dread prepare for them. I will be teaching Relief Society on the 3rd Sunday of the month. I start next week!! Yikes! I haven’t done anything like this for 10 years! I taught a few Sunday School classes at BYU, but I have basically been in Primary and Nursery since then. This will definitely be different. I think it will be good for me, though, because I feel like I’ve been slacking in my spiritual learning, haven’t read the RS lessons for years since I haven’t been able to attend, need to read my scriptures more, etc. As for John…drumroll please…he’s working in the Nursery!! I would trade him in a second! He volunteered to start out by leading the music, that was my calling in our old ward so he knew I had pictures and finger puppets, etc. But if you know John, you know that music is not his greatest calling in life. I have heard him sing a few songs to Kevin when he puts him to bed, and I think it’s really sweet. But Saturday night I was helping him get ready and lets face it, he really needs to brush up on his primary songs. I think it’s been 18 years since he sang any! I was so proud of him though, for stepping up and leading the songs. He said they only got through 2 songs yesterday, Old McDonald and I am a Child of God, because the kids were pretty rambunctious and it took a lot of time to get them to sit down.
It has been getting colder here lately. No snow, I miss the snow, but it has been chilly. Every morning I dress myself in jeans and a long sleeved shirt and then as the day goes on I realize it’s not that cold. I miss the seasons. I just checked the weather…it’s 61 now with a high of 64 today and a low of 58. We will break the 70s this weekend. I guess it’s not that cold here, it’s 44 at my parents’ house now with a high of 62 today. Hmm, funny, my nifty weather app tells me that it’s 64 at John’s parents’ house but the high for today is only 59!
We have had cable for the past month. I did not know there were so many interesting reality tv shows on. I learned about all sorts of disorders children can be born with. I think Kevin has super strength just like the little boy I saw this week. By the end of the month, we had about 200 shows on the DVR and I would flip through them and think, I don’t really want to watch any of these. I watched the latest episode of The Office and determined it was too crude for me. It’s pretty sad, I think the show has some very funny parts, but I just could not get over how bad it was this week. No more Office for me, I think. I will be watching Dancing With the Stars online, but I can’t think of anything else I really want to see. We had 30 days to try it out and we definitely canceled on day 30. Our house is already much quieter and now we can get back to our Netflix queue. I think we will go without tv for a long time. And now maybe I will read the 650 page book I’m supposed to read for book club by next week!
Some kid came to my door in August and sold me a subscription to the newspaper. A year of Thurs. – Sun. for $26. I figured if I can save 50 cents each week from coupons it will be worth it. I finally got a paper yesterday (2 months later!) and was a little concerned as I was going through the coupons and didn’t see much of anything I wanted to use. But I did find a few and I think it will work out. The P&G coupons weren’t very appealing to me, but I found some toothpaste, soup, and CANDY coupons that I think I will use. Now I just have train myself that I don’t have to look through every part of the paper. I don’t read any of it, so why do I waste my time flipping through and looking at the headlines. On the other hand, it might be good for me to have some idea of what’s happening in the world. I guess that’s what I have John for, he fills me in and brainwashes me with all the right-winged propaganda! At least he won’t be able to make me watch Glen Beck anymore!
I was just looking on the Disneyland website and found this coming up for 2010. Looks like fun! I am going to sign up for sure… volunteer for a day and get a free ticket to the park! Cool.
Here are a couple pictures of my cute boys. Out for ice cream…
And watching General Conference…
We went to John’s parents’ house to watch Conference. Only Vickie and Grandma Sherrill were there (John’s dad and sister were in Salt Lake watching it live). Here is Kevin, watching his very first session of Conference with Great-grandma Sherrill…
And later with Grandma Bunting. We ran to the Carter’s outlet between sessions (love that place!) and she just had to buy him this outfit and put it on him that day!
P.S. Response to previous comments…yes, Kevin does seem to have red hair. It looks more red sometimes depending on the lighting. Crazy! And no, Maria, I did not make those matching ties. Don’t you remember how horrible I was at crafts in Young Women’s? I found them at myfavoritepal.com.
Becky…I loved reading your thoughts…Kevin is soo cute and is getting so big. I can’t wait to catch up with you soon!
I really liked this post Becky. I used to watch a lot of TV, but I got bored with it and after a while I found it just seemed to take up too much of my time. Plus they cancelled my favorite show….so I don’t watch a whole lot of tv anymore.
. I like having the seasons, but I hate when it gets so cold! I have to live somewhere that has fall and spring and a little winter, but I wish winter wasn’t so long and cold….:) I hope you find some good coupons. I like the pictures you posted.
I am sure you will love teaching RS. I just got released from that calling. I loved it. It was nerve-wracking everytime I taught, but so worth the effort and I certainly learned A LOT!
And I LOVE not watching TV. I get so much more done now!
I am so glad we don’t have a tv because I could waste so much more time!!
Becky – you need to start reading some couponing blogs!! Yesterday I went to Winco and bought 22 pouches of Bumble Bee Tuna and two boxes of Kashi cereal (a really healthy expensive cereal). Guess how much it cost me? Only $5.08!! Without the cereal, I would have only paid $1.77 for all the tuna fish.
I would love to come and see John leading the music in the nursery!! That would be great. Brian and I are in the nursery every fourth Sunday and we teach Gospel Doctrine every three weeks. I would much rather spend every day in nursery than teach GD!! It’s good for me though and Brian helps me out a ton!
Anyhow…we love and miss you all!
Let me tell you about my coupon adventure!! Ha Ha Ha! All this for $60!
amen on the tv…i always am so mad if i sit and watch something when i should be doing a million other things. ben is begging me to get our big antena outside re-wired so we can get more than 5 channels!
i can’t believe you got your paper for $26! sweet! ours is $108 for one less day a week!! i tried couponing. sometimes it works out, other times it is way too much trouble than i am willing to go thru! hope you get your ‘lil guy to keep sleeping in. that would be awesome!
