Kudos to you for trying to get the little guy on a schedule! He will be very sleepy for about the first 6 weeks, and it newborns are supposed to get 16 hours of sleep a day, not to mention their little bellies can't go without food for more than 4 or 5 hours. Just keep trying to get him into a eat, play, sleep schedule during the day. Don't get discouraged though if it takes more than a couple of days, and ends being weeks.

Biggest piece of advice that I didn't follow until my third child: sleep when Kevin does! Don't try to get housework done, or anything else; it will always be there, but the opportunity to sleep won't be.
