Mother’s Day
Hi mom! Happy Mother’s Day! Sorry I can’t be there with you. Remember last Mother’s Day? We had dinner at Debbie’s and I left for California and you thought you’d never see me again! Well, you’ve seen me at least 4 times, that’s not bad.
So, as a tribute to you, I thought about the things you have taught me, whether they were on purpose or not, and I thought it would be fun to post some of the memories and some of the ways I am like you. Because as you know, we all turn into our mothers some day!
1. You taught me to cross stitch without even using a hoop.
2. When I went away to college, you told me that when I am tired during the day I should take cat naps and I would feel better. I still do this at work some days when I am really tired.
3. Since Wheel of Fortune was your favorite game show, I am really good at solving those puzzles.
4. You have piles of books and magazines and articles and obituaries that you plan to read. Just like you, I feel the urge to read every word that comes into my house.
5. You are pretty good at those crossword puzzles and you always have a stack cut out from the paper. I can’t do those without cheating, but I have collected a stack of sudoku puzzles that I will do someday.
6. You wanted to have a large family and you went through a lot of pain and worry to raise us all. It may not seem like it yet, but I hope to have a bunch of kids so they will always have someone to call. Thanks for providing me with so many brothers and sisters!
7. You know how to laugh at yourself. Remember the time we were at girls camp and we all laughed and said you looked like the unibomber? I thought Maria would enjoy this memory, but she might not be reading the blog these days…do you know if she had a boy or a girl? Holly, were you there for the unibomber? I wish I had a picture, it was funny. And you laughed right with us.
8. You made me scratch your head so many times. I hated it. But now I understand why you made us do it. It feels so nice to have your head massaged.
9. You are a talented singer and you are very good at the piano. I’m glad I have been able to share those talents with you in choir and to listen to you play and hope that I can get to be as good as you are. Now when are you getting grandma’s piano so I can have yours?
10. Maybe this is just genetics, but I am a night owl just like you.
11. I hated this when I was a kid, but I find myself doing it now…tap, tap, tapping your thumb on the steering wheel in time with the music on the radio.
12. And specific things I remember you teaching me when I was a child: don’t swear, wash your hands after you use the bathroom, brush your teeth, and drinking & driving is ok if you’re drinking a soda.
I love you mom! Happy Mother’s Day!
