Fun Times

While I was in high school I discovered nightclubs. The first club I started going to was called Ground Zero in Boulder, CO. I was about 16 when I went the first time. I remember going with a kid I met who went to a different high school. I can’t even recall how we met but he knew a really cool place to go and I decided to go with him. At the time I was going to church dances but they were kinda getting old. I was looking for some excitement. I made arrangements to stay over night at his house on a Friday. I went over to his place around 7pm. We played video games until about 9pm. Then we got ready and drove the hour drive to Boulder. We drove my Dad’s white Cadillac and blasted the stereo the whole time. We ended up parking on some side street off the main street with shops and stuff.

At this time it was about 11pm and there were a few college kids out and about. I followed him over to an entrance, the entrance to the club lead down stairs into a basement. One the floor by the front door was a black and white checker design. We showed the bouncer at the door our ID and paid the $5 cover charge. The club was 16 and up. Most of the people there were high school or freshmen in college. As we walked in the club was totally dark, there were some strobe lights and neon on the walls. They had a video screen on the wall playing music videos. The music was blaring, it was so loud you could feel the bass over your whole body. It was mesmerizing. I just stood there with my friend and took everything in. Then we started to walk around the club and he introduced me to a few people he knew. It was so cool, no one cared what you looked like or anything. The club it’s self was goth/industrial/new wave. It was music I had never really heard before and it was like a whole new world was opened before me. Just blew me away at the people of this strange subculture that I just got throw into.

That night I just danced all night. I ordered some caffeine drink from the bar called a “cherry double thermostat bomb.” I danced with all these people to this strange music. It was so awesome. The place was packed late into the night and then the early morning. By around 3am the crowd started to get smaller. We were there all night. I remember walking out of the club at 5:30am, dripping with sweat in the cold morning air. My head and ears were ringing. I was so tired and all I wanted was more. We walked back to the car and I drove us back to my fiends place. I crashed on his couch for a couple of hours and then went home on Sat morning around 11am. It was unbelievable.

I think that Sat night there was a church dance. I went to the church dance, but it just did not seem the same. It was nothing compared to my experience at the club. I saw my fiends at the dance and I tried to get into the whole thing, but it was numbing. At that point I just realized that there was a whole new world to explorer and my old world would be left behind.

Sometimes I missing those days of going to the nightclub in Boulder. Since then they have shut the club down and I have moved on. I still listen to the music that reminds me of a different time. It’s always fun to know that I started going to nightclubs when I was 16 and this single event opened up a whole world to me that I had no idea existed before.

The following is a video of some music they used to play at Ground Zero.

We Have Apartments

So after many years of living in apartments, our time of apartment dwelling is nearing an end. We are in the process of purchasing a house in Phoenix, AZ. We are excited about the prospect of owning our own place and having more room to live in. We are also looking forward to not moving for a long while. In celebration of getting a house I took the time and updated the apartments section of our blog. You can check it out here and see the progression of our moves.

Adam’s birthday

Did we mention that Adam had a birthday? I think we did, but here’s a little more detail.
Adam is a solemn little boy but if you can get him to laugh it is the cutest thing ever. Behind that stern face is a huge smile waiting to come out. Adam’s favorite things to do are eat anything and try to play with Kevin’s toys. He gets pushed over a lot for that but usually it does not phase him. He started really walking around his birthday, as well as sleeping through the night. He loves to dance – you should have seen him grooving to our carols on Christmas Eve!
He has picked up a few words.

Kuck = truck
Uh oh
Gog = dog
Gook = milk or any drink (he learned that from Kevin)
Baf = bath
Gook = also means book
Tickle, tickle, tickle (while tickling)
He tries to do animal sounds like roar, woof, and moo.

For his birthday we had our neighbors over for dinner and cake. They brought their nice camera and took some pictures for us. And they brought Adam a real hat (so he doesn’t have to use the lid anymore). I made him a train cake, I guess it’s my traditional first birthday design. I made the version with lots of candy on it because he loves sweets.

He helped me make his cake.

Isn’t that a great hat! Kevin opened all of Adam’s presents. Adam had to climb up on the table to see them

He really enjoyed eating his own little cake. He wasn’t quite sure at first but I pushed his finger to his mouth so he could get a taste of the frosting and after that he was sold.

We wanted to give him a haircut too, but we had to wait until we had our pictures taken, so that happened a couple weeks later.

Hello 2012!

The highlight of our New Year’s weekend was that John did not have to go to work on Friday or Monday. We were not happy this morning when John had to go to work. When Kevin got up this morning he said, “where’s Daddy?”. He was so upset when I told him daddy had gone to work. I told him to say “bye bye daddy” and he waved down the stairs at the door and with a pout said bye bye. Maybe that’s why he was grumpy all day today.

As for the weekend, we spent time at home and some time looking at a house we’re hoping to buy. Yikes! And exciting. We were all sound asleep by the time midnight rolled around, we’re pretty exciting aren’t we? Now I’m asking John what else we did…

Oh, yes, after John did some work from home we saw “The Muppet Movie” on Friday. We were going to go to a theater in one part of town but when we got to the ticket window they said they could only sell us one ticket. I asked John if I could just take Kevin but he said no. He didn’t want to hang out with Adam for two hours. :) But we found another theater and there was hardly anyone there. Weird! John got some of his favorite new movie snack, nachos. Kevin and Adam pigged out on popcorn and soda. Kevin enjoyed most of the show, but Adam got kind of bored so he did a somersault down the stairs. I had to hurry and carry him out! The boys and I really enjoyed the music, but John slept through a lot of the movie so I’m not sure what he thought of it.

On Saturday after looking at the house we took the boys out to dinner at this really fancy restaurant called Chili’s. Yum yum!

Sunday morning we actually ate breakfast before church since it started at 11 instead of 9. Even though we always have sacrament meeting first, Kevin seemed really upset when we got there. He was adamant that he should go to nursery first thing. I had to walk around the hall with him and show him there was no one in the nursery room. I was finally able to calm him down by reading “Curious George”. We made it through the rest of the meeting without having to leave. John did take Adam out to try to get him to go to sleep. His normal nap is at 10 am but he did not go to sleep until we were driving home from church at 2:00. It’s about a 3 minute drive and he was out before we pulled out of the parking lot.

Overall, this weekend was just our speed. It was really nice to be all together for a few days but now we are back in the swing of things. Sort of. Now it’s almost midnight so it’s time to get to bed! Happy New Year everyone!
